Annual Ski Letter
Season’s Greetings 2020-21
It’s been a year of challenges and change. Sure things have been difficult but it’s winter and time to go sliding. The last thing we want to take seriously is the winter experience. It’s safer outdoors with or without a mask, the safest place to be is outdoors in the mountains, breathing air that has never been breathed. Understand the virus, controlling what we can. Sliding has taught us to dream of deeper snow, pristine mountains and blue bird skies. The people in our community have found the meaning of life in the beauty of snow and the insane joy of sliding through waist-deep champagne powder with people we love. We are not the type of people who will be suffering from post-traumatic stoke disorder.
Let’s start this new season with a childlike approach, eyes wide open, looking at everything afresh. Feeling that sense of wonderment uplifts our overall feeling of gladness, improving our general health. Wonderness gives us the feeling that we are in the presence of something larger and more consequential, mysterious and ineffable. We can slide fast or slow or stop among the trees, consciously watching for small wonders around us. During just an ordinary descent, we can amplify the mental health benefits, just by paying attention to novel details. The power of the landscape with its towering mountains. The crisp air and glinting snow casts the trivial aside drawing our attention to what’s truly important. It’s such a simple thing, to look around for small wonders while we exercise, there is no downside.
Sunkissed Flaine with its immaculate pistes and infusion of ritz. Scenic snowsure sliding, most of it well above the tree line, with an easygoing relaxed pace. It’s a laidback area for people who enjoy the effortless access from this slope side resort. Gravity is alive and well here. Getting here soon will be your richest reward of all. When you arrive in Flaine, make sure to pick up your rentals or new gear at Flaine Sport. See David or Muriel for professional advice and your personal discount.
In the pursuit of good health, we know outlets of joy are just as important as good drugs. Sliding can lead to a better quality of life, if not save our life altogether. A ski or board on edge is the world’s greatest antigravity fun device helping to keep the harsh reality of life at bay. Sliding is a critical source of physical and mental well-being, at a time when the stress and uncertainty are almost unbearable. That cold alchemy of snow, exercise in the mountains has saved us a hundred times from ourselves. Incorporating physical activity into our daily life has become a health imperative. Increasing our physical activity leads to greater happiness and reduced risk for anxiety, depression and other mental ills.
Let’s commit to a life of good times and high-octane adventure. I’m feeling a sense of inspiration and excitement about what’s next. I’m not sure what it is, but I have the feeling it’s going to be something good. Consider this your personal invitation to a complete sliding experience when conditions allow. As Christmas and the New Year approach, I wish you nothing but the best. For the deepest, lightest snow, for friends that say “hey no, you go first” and for huge grins, goggles that don’t fog and bases that never stick.
From first tracks to nightcaps, raise your glasses, sliders. Cheers and powder to the people, right on.
